Ryan Murphy

Ryan Murphy is one of America’s greatest competitive swimmers and arguably the greatest male swimmer of all-time specializing in the backstroke. He currently holds six Olympic medals, four of them gold, and previously had set the world record in the men’s 100-meter backstroke. During his time at Cal from 2014-2017, Ryan dominated the NCAA backstroke competition becoming the individual national champion in both the 100-yard and 200-yard backstroke events in each of those four years; a feat which has been proclaimed one of the most stunning achievements in the history of college swimming. At the 2016 Summer Olympics, Murphy swept the backstroke events, winning gold medals in both the 100 and 200-meter backstroke races. He also won a gold medal in the 4×100 meter medley relay during which Ryan’s backstroke relay leg broke the world record. At the 2020 Summer Olympics, Murphy won a gold medal and set the world record in the 4×100-meter medley relay, in addition to a silver medal in the 200-meter backstroke and bronze medal in the 100-meter backstroke. Ryan has maintained his extensive involvement with U.C. Berkeley since his graduation as a Director of the Big C Society and as an advisor to the House Fund, an investment group funding startups founded by UC Berkeley alumni. Ryan is currently training to compete for the United States in the 2024 Summer Olympics.
